Children´s
hostel
Construction work
on the hostel for boys in Skardu is progressing, and the building is
expected to be completed by next spring or by next summer at the
most. It has 50 rooms (20 toilets and bathrooms, a big dining-hall, a
kitchen, a room for the caretaker, an office, and 25 bedrooms); it
will provide accommodation for about 120 children. We have used
material of first-rate quality and specially strong reinforced
concrete. Moreover the building is designed so as to be
earthquake-proof. We spent 60.000 Euro on the hostel this year.
School
sponsorships
We gave school
money to 250 children (220 children got 50 Euro each for village
school, 30 children got 100 Euro each for secondary school in
Skardu).
Total: 14.000 Euro
Jobs for locals
Several locals can
rely on a safe income: two jeep drivers, a tractor driver, the
guardian at the fruit plantation, two supervisors at the building
sites, one attendant at the material store, a nurse and the project
manager. Wages according to local standards.
Distribution of
clothes
We distributed
pullovers and socks among village children and high-quality
waterproof jackets among porters. The jackets were donated by
Northland (Salzburg).
Distribution of
medicine
We took some boxes
full of medicine to our dispensaries. The medicine was donated by
Eurimpharm (Piding).
Fruit
plantation near Monjong
We bought and
planted some more trees: 130 Euro.
Vehicles
As usual we had to
pay for repairs on the two jeeps: 1.200 Euro.
Shipton Treks &
Expeditions
It seems more than
ever necessary to support this trekking agency ideally. Due to the
political situation in Pakistan the number of tourists has dropped
dramatically for the last few years, and it is getting more and more
difficult for Balti porters to earn some money. This agency, which is
run exclusively by locals, pays fair wages to the porters and
provides them with shoes and waterproof clothing. Moreover, porters
are employed according to a system of rotation so that everyone gets
a chance. The agency is a non-profit organization initiated as a
self-help project.

Employment of
paediatricians
For the second
time, two paediatricians, Dr Elisabeth Klett (Bad Reichenhall) and Dr
Lambert Weber (Rosenheim) travelled to Baltistan and spent four weeks
there. They established field camps in remote mountain villages and
examined and treated some 1000 children, but also adults. Their
flight tickets were paid for by SES (Senior Experten Service, Bonn).
We spent 1.500 Euro on transport, interpreter, accommodation, food
and medicine.
Accommodation
for school children
Rent for
accommodation (in Skardu) for school children from mountain villages
and salary for the tutor: 420 Euro. After completion of the hostel
the children will all be accommodated there.
Accommodation
for college students
Last year we
bought a house in Skardu in which students visiting college are
accommodated. We spent 500 Euro for running costs.
Emergencies
One of our driver
was seriously injured when a taxi ran over him in June. Finally one
leg had to be amputated, and he can´t practise his job any longer.
We helped him to pay for his doctor´s bill. For this and similar
emergencies we paid 2.000 Euro.
Film on the work
of our organization in Baltistan
Annette Mäser, a
film maker from Salzburg (Austria) accompanied us to Baltistan in
summer 2008 and made a film about our work there. It had its first
performance at the mountain film festival in Salzburg.
