Annette Mäser, a
film maker from Salzburg (Austria), accompanied us to Baltistan in
summer 2008 and made a film about our work there. It had its first
performance at the mountain film festival in Salzburg.It can be purchased for 10 Euro per copy plus postal charges.

Construction work on our hostel is progressing. Rasool is permanently busy getting building material, giving order to workers and supervising work. The second floor is nearly finished.

Baltistan not affected by political unrest in Pakistan |
The political situation in Pakistan does not affect the region in which we realize our projects. Remote and difficult to reach, Baltistan is situated in the half-autnonmous province of the Northern Areas the population of which neither neither can take part in general elections nor must pay taxes. Thus there will not be any riots in the course of election campaigns. Moreover, Baltistan is inhabited almost exclusively by Shia Muslims so that clashes for religious reasons are not to be expected. Above all, the Balti people are very peaceful and do not wish to be involved in any conflicts.

A plot was bought
in Skardu, as well as part of the building material like cement,
steel and wood. Construction work will start in spring 2010.

The Deutscher Baltistan-Förderkreis, an organisation supporting health projects in Baltistan, has been dissolved and integrated into the Himalaya-Karakorum-Hilfe e.V.

It seems more than
ever necessary to support this trekking agency ideally. Due to the
political situation in Pakistan the number of tourists has dropped
dramatically for the last few years, and it is getting more and more
difficult for Balti porters to earn some money. This agency, which is
run exclusively by locals, pays fair wages to the porters and
provides them with shoes and waterproof clothing. Moreover, porters
are employed according to a system of rotation so that everyone gets
a chance. The agency is a non-profit organization initiated as a
self-help project.
